Biographical
Mike Leggett has been working across the institutions of art, education, cinema and media arts since the early-70s. He has a Master of Fine Art (1st Class Hons) from the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales; and a PhD from the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, University of Technology Sydney. With an Australian Postgraduate Award he investigated the precept of visual mnemonics in the development of tools and models for creative interaction with digital motion pictures.
He has film and video artwork in archives and collections in Europe, Australia, North and South America; he practices professionally as an artist, curator and writer; his skill base has included director / producer, editor, photographer, lecturer, manager and computer consultant.
Collaborative projects have included: Burning the Interface <International Artists' CD-ROM> exhibition curation with Linda Michaels for the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney; PathScape (2000) an interactive multimedia prototype for the Australian Film Commission working with programming, sound and imaging artists; Unword, (1969-2003) a performance collaboration with artist Ian Breakwell.
Recently he has contributed chapters and articles to journals and books including: Generative Systems and the Cinematic Spaces of Film and Installation Art in Leonardo V40 N2 (2007); he writes and lectures about media art, contributing to journals (Leonardo; Continuum), magazines (World Art), online ‘zines (FineArt Forum), and is a regular correspondent for the Australian contemporary arts newspaper RealTime, and book reviewer for Leonardo Digital Reviews.
He has undertaken consultations for the Australia Council, the National Association for the Visual Arts and the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Melbourne. He was a founding member of the London Filmmakers Cooperative workshop and the Bristol Film and Video Workshop; Chair of the South West Arts Film and Video Panel (UK), and served two terms on the Board of dLux Media Arts (Sydney).
